Syllabus CH651

Fall 2008

Molecular Quantum Mechanics I

This course teaches quantum mechanics with an emphasis on chemical applications. The first half of the course will concentrate on postulates of quantum mechanics with application to model systems: particle in a box, harmonic oscillator, rigid rotor, hydrogen atom, tunneling, perturbation theory; the second half of the course will concentrate on computational methods, including Hartree-Fock, DFT, MP2, QCISD, CCSD etc.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You must turn in all homework sets.  Failure to do so may result in a grade of "Fail" or "Incomplete".

Students are encouraged to form study groups to discuss the homework problems. However, each individual is expected the complete the homework on their own. Outright copying of solutions from another student, the internet or a book is NOT permissible. Each individual is expected to be able to explain independently the homework handed in.

Late Assignments

Homework is due by Monday before class. You will be given a minimum of two weeks for completing the homework. No credit will be given to late homework unless prior arrangement has been made. Late homework still has to be handed in. Otherwise you may receive a fail or incomplete for the class. It is encouraged to slide your homework under my door (501 SCI) well before the due date.
