Lectures

Required: “Principles of Modern Chemistry” by Oxtoby, Gillis and Nachtrieb, 5th edition

Required: Webassign account

Recommended: Student Solutions Manual for the textbook

Laboratory

Required:          (1) General Chemistry Laboratory manual by Golger;

(2) Lab notebook; (3) Safety goggles; (4) Lab coat.

(Please be aware that safety goggles are mandatory in the laboratory. It is a state law in Massachusetts.)  Note: In the lab, all students who wear contact lenses should wear prescription glasses under their safety goggles. Contact lenses are forbidden in the lab. All students must wear the appropriate clothing: long pants, long sleeves and closed shoes (no sandals). The detailed laboratory schedule is provided below.

Point distribution for grading:

                                                            Exams                          30%

                                                            Homeworks                 20%

                                                            Laboratory                   30%

                                                            Final Exam                   20%

Late homework will receive zero grade but must be done. Failure of doing any webassign homework will result in a grade of Incomplete. If you have a legitimate reason for doing your homework late (severe illness, family crisis, etc.) you must be prepared to present appropriate evidence. If it is acceptable then the rest of your grades will be adjusted to take into account the missing grade. If the final exam is missed, you will be given a grade based on a zero for the exam. The exam can then be made up at the end of the Fall semester when the exam will be given again. A new grade will be calculated and a grade change form will be made out.

Academic Conduct Code: Students are expected to adhere to the provisions of the Academic Conduct Code, which is described in a pamphlet available from the College of Arts and Sciences.

The Academic Conduct Code can also be obtained online at

http://www.bu.edu/cas/academics/programs/conductcode.html
